The red-breasted goose is the smallest of the European goose species and has an elegant plumage of black combined with red-chestnut and highlighted by white stripes. In flight you can see the short neck and the completely black coloring under the wings. The body length is 54-60 cm and it has an average weight of 1400-1625 g with a wingspan between 110-125 cm.

The red-breasted goose breeds in Arctic Siberia, on the Taymyr, Gyda and Yamal peninsulas. It’s only present in Romania during the winter along the shores of the Black Sea. It arrives starting in October and departs back to the nesting territories in March.

Overall, the global population is in decline, with the species currently classified as “Vulnerable”. Degradation of nesting areas through mining activities, accidental hunting in migration and wintering areas, poaching, urban development around roosting lakes are all dangers affecting this species.

Die Rothalsgans ist die kleinste der europäischen Gänsearten und hat ein elegantes Gefieder, das schwarz mit kastanienrot kombiniert und durch weiße Streifen hervorgehoben wird. Im Flug kann man den kurzen Hals und die komplett schwarze Färbung unter den Flügeln sehen. Die Körperlänge beträgt 54-60 cm, das Durchschnittsgewicht liegt bei 1400-1625 g und die Flügelspannweite bei 110-125 cm.

Die Rothalsgans brütet im arktischen Sibirien, auf den Halbinseln Taymyr, Gyda und Yamal. In Rumänien ist sie nur im Winter an den Küsten des Schwarzen Meeres anzutreffen. Sie trifft ab Oktober ein und kehrt im März in ihre Nistgebiete zurück.

Insgesamt ist der weltweite Bestand rückläufig, und die Art wird derzeit als “gefährdet” eingestuft. Die Zerstörung der Nistgebiete durch Bergbau, die unbeabsichtigte Bejagung in den Wander- und Überwinterungsgebieten, die Wilderei und die städtische Entwicklung in der Nähe der Seen, in denen die Vögel übernachten, sind allesamt Gefahren, die diese Art bedrohen.
